At this year’s Lagos Leather Fair, Wema Bank underscored its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s small business sector by awarding grants totaling N3 million to three outstanding Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that emerged winners in the event’s business pitch competition.

The three entrepreneurs—EwaOluwa Morenikeji of House of Ewa LTD, Joy Fache James of Paciencia, and Fatima Yusuf of House of Zibima—each received N1 million to grow their businesses.

Wema Bank’s initiative reflects its ongoing strategy to empower Nigerian MSMEs with practical support beyond traditional banking services. The grants are intended to help these businesses scale, acquire essential equipment, and improve their overall operations.

Speaking about the bank’s vision, Wema Bank Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Moruf Oseni, highlighted the critical role MSMEs play in Nigeria’s economic development. He noted that supporting MSMEs is not only a way to boost economic activity but also a means of driving positive impact at the grassroots.

“MSMEs present a two-fold opportunity for us at Wema Bank. With MSMEs constituting the bulk of the economy, empowering MSMEs not only translates to stimulating Nigeria’s economy, but even more importantly, it means extending the reach of our impact to the grassroots and providing support for the people to thrive both personally and professionally,” Oseni said.

For the winners, the grants represent more than financial assistance—they are a pathway to expansion and greater competitiveness. EwaOluwa Morenikeji, founder of House of Ewa LTD, expressed appreciation for the recognition and the opportunity to grow her business.

“I’m deeply grateful for this opportunity to put my business out there and get the support I need to scale. This will impact my business. I intend to use this money to expand my business, get better machinery and ensure that our output continues to get better and better,” she said.

The Lagos Leather Fair itself is an annual event that celebrates Africa’s thriving leather industry, bringing together designers, manufacturers, and enthusiasts from around the world to showcase the continent’s creativity and craftsmanship. Wema Bank sponsored the event for the second consecutive year, reinforcing its interest in promoting African culture and supporting industries that can compete globally.

This year’s grant initiative also coincided with Wema Bank’s broader celebration of World MSME Day, a global observance aimed at recognizing the crucial contribution of small businesses to economies worldwide. By providing targeted financial support and championing local talent, the bank continues to position itself as a key partner for Nigerian MSMEs seeking to grow sustainably and profitably.
