Afrobeats artist Zinoleesky has opened up about the lengths he went to in order to make his mark in the Nigerian music industry, including leaving home at a young age to follow his dreams.

Parental Expectations vs. Artistic Ambition

Speaking in a recent interview with SB Live, the singer described the challenges of growing up in a typical Nigerian household where professional careers or vocational training are prioritised over creative pursuits.

“Nigerian parents are always in denial whenever you want to do stuffs like music. They want you to do a professional course or learn a trade. So, you just have to find a way,” Zinoleesky explained.

His words highlight a familiar struggle for many young Nigerians: balancing personal passions with family expectations.

Taking Risks for a Dream

Determined not to give up, Zinoleesky recounted some of the bold decisions he made as a teenager.

“Me, I did some crazy stuffs. I ran away from home to do music,” he revealed.

This drastic move was driven by his commitment to carving out a career in the highly competitive Nigerian music scene.

From Freestyle Rapper to Afrobeats Star

Zinoleesky also shared that his musical journey didn’t begin with singing. He originally started out as a rapper before evolving his style to fit the Afrobeats sound that would eventually make him famous.

He first gained widespread attention in 2017, when videos of his street freestyles went viral online, showcasing his raw talent and charisma.

Turning Down Offers, Choosing His Path

There were even rumours at one point that Zinoleesky declined a recording deal from Davido’s DMW, choosing instead to sign with Naira Marley’s Marlian Music in December 2019.

This decision turned out to be pivotal for his career.

Rise to Prominence

Under Marlian Music, Zinoleesky released his debut project Chrome Eccentric, which featured hits like ‘Ma Pariwo’ and ‘Kilofeshe’, helping to cement his reputation as one of Afrobeats’ most exciting new voices.

His success story resonates with many aspiring artists who dream of overcoming social and familial barriers to find their place in Nigeria’s vibrant music scene.

Zinoleesky’s candour about his early struggles and choices serves as a reminder that behind the glamour of the industry often lie sacrifices and tough personal decisions.
