The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has commenced the offtake of 10 Megawatts of solar energy from the Haske Solar Plant, located within the Challawa Industrial Cluster, Kano.
This follows the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Haske Solar Company Ltd, the Federal Government-backed firm behind the project. The 10MW plant—commissioned in January 2023—was developed by the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and is managed by the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI).
In a statement released by KEDCO’s Head of Corporate Communications, Sani Bala Sani, the agreement was formally signed in Abuja by KEDCO’s MD/CEO, Dr. Abubakar Shuaibu Jimeta, and the company’s Executive Director, Portfolio Management, Mr. Tajudeen Datti Ahmed. The signing was witnessed by Yusuf Yahaya, Managing Director of Future Energies Africa (FEA), KEDCO’s core investor.
Strengthening Power Supply and Energy Transition
Speaking on the development, Dr. Jimeta described the partnership as a significant step toward sustainable energy integration.
“This partnership is a major step forward in our commitment to delivering reliable and sustainable electricity to our customers. By integrating solar power into our supply mix, we are not only improving network efficiency but also contributing to Nigeria’s energy transition goals,” he said.
He explained that the energy offtake has already begun, with electricity evacuated through the Abattoir Injection Substation to serve industrial customers within the Challawa cluster via the NBC 11KV and Ceramic 11KV Feeders.
According to him, the 10MW of solar power will boost energy security across KEDCO’s franchise states—Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa—supporting industries, protecting jobs, and strengthening competitiveness.
A Push for Renewable Energy
Also speaking, Future Energies Africa MD, Yusuf Yahaya, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to expanding renewable energy adoption.
“As KEDCO’s core investor, FEA is keenly committed to transforming the company and providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity. Through innovative solutions and partnerships, we aim to lead the way in renewable energy adoption and sustainable development,” Yahaya said.
KEDCO praised the Federal Government, NSIA, MOFI, and the Kano State Government for driving the project, describing the Haske plant as Nigeria’s largest grid-connected solar facility and a milestone in the country’s renewable energy efforts.
The distribution company added that more renewable projects are under review as part of its wider energy diversification strategy, aimed at ensuring uninterrupted and cleaner power supply across its network.
