President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended heartfelt congratulations to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for advancing to the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, marking their fifth consecutive appearance at this stage of the tournament.

The president’s commendation came in a statement issued by Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga on Sunday, following the team’s hard-fought 75–68 victory over Senegal in Saturday’s semi-final clash at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The win not only extends D’Tigress’ unbeaten run against their West African rivals to seven straight games but also propels them into the championship game against Mali, with the chance to clinch a record-extending fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and seventh overall.

President Tinubu lauded the team for their tenacity, composure, and unrelenting pursuit of excellence, describing their triumph over Senegal as a “final before the final” and a testament to Nigeria’s growing stature in international basketball.

“I have observed the discipline, focus, and team spirit consistently displayed by D’Tigress throughout this tournament,” the president noted. “These are qualities that have brought honour to our nation and earned respect for our players and coaches worldwide.”

A special mention was given to Rena Wakama, D’Tigress’ head coach and the first woman to hold the role. Tinubu applauded her leadership, citing her transition from player to coach as an inspiration not only to her team but to the entire nation.

“I especially commend Rena Wakama, whose leadership and experience—both on the court and now from the bench—continue to inspire D’Tigress to new heights in this highly competitive sport,” he said.

Saturday’s win also earned D’Tigress a spot in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, further solidifying their status as a dominant force on the continent and a growing presence on the global stage.

As the team prepares to face Mali in Sunday’s final, President Tinubu reaffirmed the government's unwavering support, urging the players to remain focused as they chase yet another historic milestone.

With D’Tigress on the cusp of securing their seventh continental crown, their story continues to be one of resilience, excellence, and pride for Nigeria.
