India’s National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and fintech giant Razorpay have teamed up with Microsoft-backed OpenAI to introduce AI-powered payment services on ChatGPT, marking a major leap in the country’s digital finance landscape.
Announced on Thursday, the collaboration will allow users in India to make seamless UPI-based payments directly within ChatGPT, leveraging Razorpay’s payment infrastructure and NPCI’s real-time payments network.
The move integrates conversational AI with financial transactions, enabling users to perform tasks such as checking balances, transferring money, or paying bills through natural language prompts — without leaving the ChatGPT interface.
Industry analysts have described the rollout as a first-of-its-kind initiative, blending OpenAI’s advanced language model capabilities with India’s world-leading Unified Payments Interface (UPI) ecosystem, which handles billions of transactions monthly.
According to a joint statement, the goal of the partnership is to simplify digital payments, enhance user experience, and demonstrate secure, AI-assisted financial interactions at scale.
With over 400 million UPI users and growing integration between AI and financial services, the new ChatGPT payments feature positions India at the forefront of global fintech innovation — showcasing how artificial intelligence can power real-world transactions in a secure and user-friendly way.
