In a candid conversation with CNN, Nigerian global music star Tems has shed light on her challenging journey to stardom and her mission to uplift women in the industry.

The Grammy-winning singer and songwriter revealed that her early years in music were filled with frustration and self-doubt, as she often struggled to gain recognition and respect in a male-dominated space.

“It was really hard to get people to take me seriously, not just as a producer, but as a singer, period,” Tems shared. “I didn’t feel safe, I didn’t feel seen, and I didn’t feel supported for a very long time. Authenticity is everything to me. That’s the one thing I cannot compromise on because that’s all I have — who I really am.”

Tems also pointed out the lack of visibility for women occupying creative and technical roles within the music industry. “There are so many talented women who can be producers, managers, audio engineers — but they’re not even visible,” she said.

Beyond her personal success, Tems is now using her platform to spotlight and support women through her initiative, The Leading Vibe, which aims to empower women in music both within Nigeria and across Africa.

“So, I want to make them visible and create a space where we can redefine the perspective of women in music,” she explained. “We’re definitely taking this beyond Nigeria. Actually, we’re going to Kenya next. There are women everywhere who just need to feel seen. All they need is that platform, all they need is that chance, and I really believe it’s going to change the shape of the music industry for sure.”

With her vision for inclusivity and empowerment, Tems continues to establish herself not only as a global music icon but also as a voice for transformation in the creative industry.
