Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Yemi Alade has candidly shared a personal struggle from her past, revealing that repeatedly lying about her age once plunged her into a brief period of depression.

In a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the award-winning singer recounted how, for three years, she consistently told people she was 22 years old — only to later discover she was actually 25.

According to Yemi, the realisation came as a shock and left her emotionally unsettled.

“There was a time someone asked me how old I was, and for about three years I kept saying 22,” she said. “Then one day, I calculated it and realised I was already 25. I was depressed for a few days because my mind couldn’t process it. It was mental — for three years, I didn’t know my age.”

The “Knack Am” hitmaker explained that the experience became a defining moment of self-awareness, teaching her how easily self-deception can affect mental health and personal growth.

She described the period as both challenging and enlightening, noting that it helped her become more honest with herself and more accepting of her journey through life and fame.
