Former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju has applauded national team head coach Eric Chelle for orchestrating a dramatic revival in Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

The Super Eagles stumbled through the early phase of the qualifiers, failing to win any of their first four matches—an alarming run that raised doubts about their ability to advance. Confidence within the fan base dipped, and concerns grew among stakeholders as the team struggled for cohesion and consistency.

However, Nigeria’s fortunes have shifted significantly since the appointment of Chelle, the Malian tactician entrusted with rescuing the campaign. Under his leadership, the Super Eagles have gone seven matches unbeaten, registering five wins and two draws to secure a place in the final round of the World Cup playoffs.

Adepoju, speaking to Sporty TV after Nigeria’s emphatic 4–1 victory over Gabon on Thursday night, praised Chelle for accepting the job at a time many coaches would have walked away from the challenge.

“I think Chelle has done a great job. When he was employed, the situation we were at that moment, no coach would have taken the job,” the former international said.

“He came and took the job, and he is pulling his weight and putting everything in good perspective, and we are seeing good games with the Super Eagles. He deserves accolades and all our praise. He is really doing a great job.”

Chelle’s tenure has been marked by increased tactical clarity, improved defensive organisation, and a renewed attacking spark—elements widely credited with restoring belief within the squad and among supporters.

Nigeria now prepare for a crucial showdown against DR Congo in the final of the 2026 World Cup playoffs on Sunday. A victory would send the Super Eagles into the intercontinental playoff round, keeping hopes alive for qualification to the tournament in USA, Canada and Mexico.

With momentum back on their side and confidence restored, Nigeria’s World Cup journey remains very much alive—thanks in large part to Chelle’s timely leadership and the team’s revitalised spirit.
