Brazilian midfielder Oscar is set to begin a period of rest after being released from hospital on Sunday, five days after a medical emergency left him briefly unconscious during São Paulo’s pre-season activities. His club confirmed the development in an official statement, offering reassurance about the 34-year-old’s condition following extensive tests.

According to São Paulo, Oscar’s collapse was caused by vasovagal syncope, a common medical episode triggered by a sudden drop in blood pressure or heart rate, often resulting in fainting. The club noted that he remained “stable and clinically well” throughout his stay at Einstein Hospital Israelita. He will follow a prescribed rest program over the coming days as part of his recovery plan.

The incident occurred on Tuesday during routine pre-season evaluations, when Oscar suddenly collapsed and required ambulance transport to the hospital. Initial concerns arose after the club reported that he had suffered “cardiac changes,” and local media noted he was unconscious for roughly two minutes before regaining awareness.

Oscar, who rejoined São Paulo — his boyhood club — in December on a free transfer, is under contract until 2027 after spending several successful years abroad. He rose to prominence at Chelsea, winning two Premier League titles and a Europa League crown after his 2012 arrival in London. In 2017, he completed a high-profile move to Shanghai for a reported $73 million, becoming one of the Chinese Super League’s biggest stars and capturing three league titles.

On the international stage, Oscar represented Brazil at the 2014 World Cup, famously scoring his team’s lone goal in the 7–1 semifinal defeat to eventual champions Germany.

With his release from hospital confirmed, Oscar is expected to remain under medical observation while he resumes recovery and awaits clearance to rejoin São Paulo’s preparations for the new season.
