With the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations fast approaching, debate is intensifying over which nation will lift the trophy in Morocco, and a former African international has warned that the race remains wide open.

Nigeria are among the countries widely backed to challenge for the title, having finished runners-up at the last tournament two years ago. The Super Eagles narrowly lost the 2023 final to hosts Ivory Coast, who claimed a dramatic 2–1 victory.

Speaking to Filgoal, former Senegal defender Ferdinand Coly said identifying a clear favourite at this stage was difficult, noting that such clarity usually only emerges as the tournament progresses. However, he pointed to Morocco as a strong early candidate, citing both their top ranking in Africa and the advantage of playing on home soil.

According to Coly, traditional heavyweights Senegal, Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia must also be considered serious contenders, given their pedigree and tournament experience.

He added that other established sides, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Cameroon, should not be overlooked when assessing potential winners. Coly also suggested that Cape Verde could spring a surprise, based on their recent performances.

The former defender stressed that he would not be shocked if any of the eight to ten teams he highlighted ultimately emerge champions in Morocco.

Nigeria have been drawn in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania. As part of their build-up to the tournament, the Super Eagles faced Egypt in an international friendly on Tuesday night, where the Pharaohs edged Eric Chelle’s side 2–1.
