The momentum building around Start From Scratch in Lagos has reshaped expectations for what accessible music education can look like on the African continent. After years of travelling through global cultural capitals—from London and Berlin to Paris and Amsterdam—the initiative’s Lagos debut became a defining moment, powered by HOMECOMING™’s newly opened creative space and AlphaTheta’s cutting-edge DJ technology.

Demand for the 2025 workshops surged from the moment the first class opened in September. Every session that followed was fully booked, drawing enthusiastic newcomers eager to understand the foundations of DJing. What participants encountered was more than technical training: the programme offered a broad introduction to creative practice, from beatmatching and transitions to narrative building, artistic identity and the development of a unique sonic signature.

A dynamic roster of mentors shaped the Lagos experience, including Dope Caesar, Weareallchemicals, Honeeay, and the collectives Dencity, Floss and Femme Africa. Their presence brought together a range of perspectives rooted in contemporary African sound, creating an environment that encouraged openness, confidence and collaboration. This approach aligns with HOMECOMING™’s track record across Europe and Africa, where mentors such as Major League DJz, DJ Spinall, Gina Jeanz, Donnie Sunshine, Dare Balogun and Kitty Amor have contributed to a growing global network of educators and artists.

The Lagos run demonstrated that Start From Scratch is evolving into something larger than a series of workshops. It is becoming a long-term investment in talent development, cultural infrastructure and creative ecosystems across Africa. The partnership with AlphaTheta has helped broaden access to professional tools and learning pathways, ensuring that aspiring DJs are supported as they navigate both the art and industry of music.

Buoyed by the success of 2025, HOMECOMING™ and AlphaTheta are preparing a more ambitious roll-out for 2026. Plans include expanding to additional cities, increasing the number of sessions and deepening the educational framework. The aim is clear: to extend opportunity, nurture new voices and keep building the momentum sparked by Lagos’ transformative first year.
