Global attention has turned once again to Nigerian Afrobeats after former United States President Barack Obama included songs by Burna Boy and Olamide in his annual list of favourite music.

The much-anticipated lists of books, movies and music for 2025 were released on Thursday, continuing a tradition Obama began during his time in the White House. Among the music selections were Tatata by Burna Boy featuring American rapper Travis Scott, and 99 by Olamide, which features Daecolm, Seyi Vibez, Asake and Young John.

British-Nigerian singer Obongjayar also earned a place on the list with his track Not In Surrender, further highlighting the growing influence of artists with Nigerian roots on the global music scene.

Obama’s music picks for the year span multiple genres and regions, reflecting a diverse listening taste. Other prominent artists featured include American superstars Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Lady Gaga and Gunna, as well as Canadian rapper Drake.

Announcing the lists on his official X account, Obama said the tradition is meant to share recommendations and introduce audiences to new creative works. “As 2025 comes to a close, I’m continuing a tradition that I started during my time in the White House: sharing my annual lists of favorite books, movies, and music. I hope you find something new to enjoy,” he wrote.

Over the years, Obama’s annual lists have gained wide attention for their cultural influence, often boosting the global visibility of artists, authors and filmmakers featured. For Nigerian musicians, inclusion on the former president’s list is widely seen as a nod to Afrobeats’ expanding global reach and mainstream acceptance.
