Oman’s leading budget airline, SalamAir, is set to expand its international network with a direct flight route from Muscat to Medan, Indonesia, beginning July 3, 2026. The twice-weekly service marks SalamAir’s first-ever direct link to Southeast Asia, strengthening connectivity between Oman and one of Indonesia’s most dynamic regions while providing budget-friendly travel options for both leisure and business passengers.

The new route is part of SalamAir’s strategic expansion into high-growth, underserved markets. By offering direct access to North Sumatra, the airline aims to stimulate tourism, business exchanges, and workforce mobility, leveraging Muscat as a regional hub that connects passengers to key destinations across the Gulf, Middle East, and beyond. Cities such as Jeddah, Dammam, Doha, Kuwait, Sharjah, Baghdad, Beirut, Tehran, Nairobi, and Salalah will now be easily accessible via SalamAir’s Muscat hub.

Medan, the capital of North Sumatra, is emerging as both a tourism and business destination. The city’s rich cultural heritage, blending Malay, Chinese, Indian, and European influences, attracts travelers seeking diverse culinary experiences, historic architecture, and vibrant markets. Medan also serves as the gateway to natural attractions such as Lake Toba—the world’s largest volcanic lake—and the Bukit Lawang rainforest, home to an orangutan sanctuary and pristine jungle treks.

For business travelers, Medan’s growing role in Indonesia’s industrial landscape, particularly in palm oil, rubber, and agricultural trade, makes it an ideal hub. The new SalamAir route is expected to enhance trade relations between Oman and Indonesia while boosting tourism flows.

“Launching Medan reflects our strategic approach to network expansion, connecting high-demand markets that have been underserved,” said Steven Allen, Chief Commercial Officer of SalamAir. “Indonesia is a key market for tourism, trade, and workforce mobility, and this route allows us to stimulate new traffic flows through competitive fares while leveraging Muscat as an efficient hub.”

H.E. Mohamad Irzan Djohan, Indonesian Ambassador to Oman, welcomed the launch, highlighting its potential to strengthen trade, tourism, investment, and people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.

The Muscat–Medan service aligns with Oman’s broader economic strategy under Oman Vision 2040, which emphasizes expanding international connectivity, fostering tourism, and enhancing the nation’s role as a regional aviation and logistics hub.

With twice-weekly flights, SalamAir’s direct connection provides passengers with convenient, cost-effective access to Medan while reinforcing Muscat’s position as a central gateway linking the Gulf to Southeast Asia. The move underscores SalamAir’s ambition to expand its footprint in Asia while offering affordable, high-quality travel options to emerging markets.
