Media personality Toke Makinwa has sparked debate after challenging the long-held belief that women are usually the gold diggers in relationships. Speaking on her podcast alongside reality TV star Tacha, Makinwa argued that society unfairly targets women while overlooking the growing number of men who marry into wealth without facing the same criticism.
She noted that although women are frequently accused of being financially motivated in their romantic choices, many men deliberately pursue and marry into affluent families—often with far less public scrutiny.
“People are constantly always insulting women for knowing what they want,” she said. “You sit with all these podcasts as men, or you air your thoughts and say women are dating men for money. Men are the biggest gold diggers in the world. They marry generational wealth, and they do it without shame.”
Makinwa highlighted the double standard: while society labels women who marry wealthy men as opportunistic, men who do the same are rarely judged in the same way.
Not an Attack on Men, But an Observation
Despite her blunt remarks, she was quick to clarify that her intention was not to condemn men who marry strategically. Instead, she pointed out that financial considerations have always been embedded in marriage—across cultures and generations.
“And I don’t hate them,” she added. “If my brother comes to me with two ladies and asks which one to marry, I will advise him to marry the one from a good financial background.”
Her comments have since ignited wide conversation on gender expectations, class mobility, and the evolving dynamics of modern relationships—once again placing Makinwa at the centre of a national discussion.
