The duo’s fallout began in 2019, after Burna Boy threatened to “deal” with AKA if they ever met. The disagreement reportedly stemmed from allegations that AKA encouraged xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa by sharing screenshots of hate messages he claimed to have received from Nigerian accounts following banter over the AFCON quarterfinals.
In a posthumous birthday tribute shared on AKA’s Instagram page, Burna Boy said the feud had been settled privately via Twitter DMs, but expressed regret that they never had the chance to meet and collaborate as planned.
He wrote:
“Happy birthday Supa Mega. We fell out over bullsh*t even though we squashed it over Twitter DMs nobody knew about, we never got the chance to really link up and do what we were supposed to do. I will regret that until I see you again. Until then, R.I.P Mega.”
AKA was shot dead by a gunman outside a restaurant in Durban on 10 February 2023. The trial into his murder is still ongoing.
