Ethiopian Airlines Group has confirmed the purchase of nine Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, with deliveries scheduled between 2031 and 2033, as part of its long-term fleet expansion and modernization strategy.

The new aircraft are expected to support the airline’s plans to expand its route network and strengthen international connectivity, offering passengers greater flexibility and improved travel options across its global operations.

The latest order follows the airline’s earlier commitment for 11 Boeing 737 MAX jets announced at the Dubai Airshow. Both the 787 and 737 MAX purchases were finalised in December 2025, increasing Ethiopian Airlines’ order book by 20 fuel-efficient Boeing aircraft.

Commenting on the development, Group Chief Executive Officer, Mesfin Tasew, said the order reflects the airline’s ongoing focus on fleet renewal and service improvement. He noted that the acquisition of modern, fuel-efficient aircraft aligns with Ethiopian Airlines’ strategic vision to enhance customer experience while advancing sustainable aviation practices.

Ethiopian Airlines currently operates Africa’s largest Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet, deploying its 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft on long-haul intercontinental routes from Addis Ababa to destinations across Europe, Asia and North America, as well as on key intra-African routes.

Boeing also welcomed the order, describing the 787 Dreamliner family as a transformative aircraft for global aviation. The manufacturer said the partnership with Ethiopian Airlines supports the shared goal of strengthening Africa’s connectivity with the rest of the world through efficient and passenger-friendly aircraft.

With the new deal, Ethiopian Airlines’ total number of Boeing 787-9 aircraft on order now stands at 20. The airline also holds significant firm orders, options and purchase rights for Boeing 737 MAX and Boeing 777X aircraft.

Beyond fleet growth, Ethiopian Airlines Group is pursuing major infrastructure and modernization projects, including the development of the Bishoftu International Mega Airport City, which is expected to play a key role in reshaping African aviation and reinforcing the airline’s position in the global market.
