Fresh controversy has erupted in Nigeria’s entertainment space following remarks credited to singer Wizkid, in which he reportedly claimed to be bigger than late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

The claim, made during a response to criticisms from Seun Kuti, has drawn a sharp reaction from Motunrayo Kuti, one of Fela’s daughters, who has publicly condemned the statement.

Motunrayo reacted in a video broadcast circulating online, describing Wizkid’s comment as disrespectful and unacceptable. She berated the singer for comparing himself to Fela, whose legacy, she said, transcends music.

“Wizkid, you said you are bigger than Fela, right?” she said in the video. “Since you said you are bigger than our own father, you are also bigger than your father… And our father is definitely bigger than your father and mother.”

She further criticised Wizkid over his personal life and legacy, warning that public opinion could eventually turn against him.

“You that abandoned your baby mamas. Don’t worry, we will all be here when they start to rubbish your own legacy too,” she added.

The reaction comes amid ongoing tension between Wizkid and members of the Kuti family, following Seun Kuti’s earlier criticisms of the singer and his father. Wizkid’s response to those remarks, which included the controversial comparison with Fela, has continued to generate debate and backlash across social media.

Fela Anikulapo-Kuti remains widely regarded as one of Africa’s most influential cultural figures, celebrated not only for pioneering Afrobeat music but also for his activism and outspoken opposition to military rule and social injustice in Nigeria.
