Lagos-born AS Monaco forward George Ilenikhena has etched his name into UEFA Champions League history by becoming the youngest African player to reach 15 appearances in the competition. The milestone, confirmed by UEFA on Wednesday, sees him surpass a record previously held by former Nigeria international Nwankwo Kanu.

Ilenikhena achieved the feat at 19 years and 157 days, following his 18-minute appearance in Monaco’s 6-1 loss to Real Madrid on Tuesday. UEFA announced the record shortly after the match, confirming the young striker’s rising prominence on Europe’s biggest stage.

“George Ilenikhena makes history. Youngest African player to reach 15 UCL games,” UEFA stated.

Kanu’s Long-Standing Record Broken

Kanu set the previous benchmark at 19 years and 260 days on April 17, 1996, during Ajax’s Champions League semi-final first-leg against Panathinaikos. The Nigerian legend scored in the 3-0 win, helping Ajax overturn a first-leg deficit. Ajax ultimately fell to Juventus in the final on penalties.

Kanu went on to enjoy a distinguished Champions League career, scoring five goals and providing 13 assists in 60 appearances, and winning the competition with Ajax in the 1994/95 season.

Ilenikhena’s Rise Through Europe

Born in Lagos on August 16, 2006, Ilenikhena moved to France at the age of three and developed through the French youth football system. He began his professional career with Amiens SC, where strong performances in Ligue 2 drew attention from clubs across Europe.

In 2023, he joined Royal Antwerp, where he made his Champions League debut. He quickly made an impact by scoring a dramatic 92nd-minute winner against Barcelona on December 13, 2023, in a 3-2 victory—his first notable breakthrough on the continental stage.

In July 2024, Ilenikhena moved to AS Monaco, where he has become a regular feature in both domestic and European competitions. He also became Monaco’s youngest-ever Champions League goalscorer, breaking a record previously held by Kylian Mbappé.

This season, the striker has played in 14 Ligue 1 matches, scoring two goals.

International Future Still Open

At 19, Ilenikhena has not yet decided on his international allegiance. He has represented France at youth level, earning a call-up to the U-16 team in 2021, but remains eligible to represent Nigeria at senior level.

His record-breaking achievement in the Champions League further strengthens his profile and raises the stakes in the ongoing debate about his international future.
