Super Eagles defender Igoh Ogbu has expressed disappointment over Nigeria’s inability to keep clean sheets at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, despite the team’s perfect group-stage record.

Nigeria secured nine points from three matches in the group phase, scoring eight goals but conceding four. While the tally was enough to advance comfortably to the knockout stage, Ogbu said the defensive lapses remain a source of personal frustration.

“Every defender wants to have a clean sheet, and it is really painful when you do not get it,” the 25-year-old centre-back told Ademola Victor TV. “I am a little bit disappointed, but at the same time I have to enjoy the moment and just look forward to the next game.”

Nigeria ended the group stage without a clean sheet, conceding an average of 1.3 goals per match, despite recording strong defensive stats in tackles, interceptions, and clearances, and avoiding errors that directly led to goals. Ogbu singled out conceding against a Ugandan side reduced to ten men as particularly frustrating.

Reflecting on the team’s overall performance, Ogbu praised the Super Eagles’ composure and maturity. “I think it was good, the way we handled every game. It was very important and good for us,” he said.

The Slavia Prague defender also highlighted the squad’s depth and unity, insisting that internal competition has strengthened the team rather than created division. “The team is solid. The defence is solid, the bench is solid, everything is solid. Everybody here is family, and we are going to keep working hard,” he said.

He added: “The competition in defence and midfield is growing, and as a player, that excites you. When you know someone else is ready to fight for the position, it pushes you.”

Ogbu concluded by appealing to Nigerians to continue backing the team as they enter the decisive knockout stages. “I just want everybody to support us. That support keeps us working hard, and hopefully we are going to make them proud.”
