Afrobeats singer Iyanya has revealed that he is currently unable to fully commit to relationships, citing negative past experiences and the demanding nature of his music career as major factors.

In a recent interview on the Afropolitan Podcast, the 39-year-old singer explained that previous relationships have left him emotionally scarred. He described how, during conflicts, former partners allegedly threatened to damage his reputation by sharing private details with the media — a recurring pattern that has impacted his trust and willingness to commit again.

Iyanya said the pressures of celebrity life have intensified his reluctance, especially because misunderstandings in relationships often become public scandals. He admitted that the fear of private issues becoming public has made it difficult for him to invest in serious emotional connections.

“I’m not thinking of a serious relationship or marriage because I’m not mentally ready yet,” Iyanya stated. “If you are patient and stick around until I get to a convenient space, then we can do it.”

He added, “To be committed is one of the hardest things for me to do. Because I have been committed several times as a celebrity, and each time, I got hurt.”

He further explained that his fame has made him vulnerable to betrayal and manipulation, especially when disputes arise. “You know, when you are famous, you always have girlfriends who can’t wait to go to the blogs when you have misunderstandings.”

The singer also emphasized that despite being in the industry for 17 years, he has never taken relationships lightly. “I’m human, too. It’s not possible for me to be in the music industry for 17 years, and all I have been doing is playing games with women,” he said.

Iyanya went on to reveal that he has fallen genuinely in love in the past, but repeated threats to publicize their private conflicts eventually caused him to develop commitment issues.

In addition to his relationship struggles, Iyanya shared that he has chosen to practice celibacy, though he admitted it is not always easy to maintain. “My celibacy fluctuates; it goes up and down,” he confessed.

The singer said he is currently focused on emotional healing and personal growth, suggesting that he may be open to commitment again once he reaches a healthier mental space.
