The hosts surged into a two-goal lead in the first half, punishing Liverpool’s defensive frailty despite seeing little of the ball. Evanilson opened the scoring after capitalising on a loose moment from Virgil van Dijk, before Alex Jimenez doubled the advantage with his first goal for the club, slipping in behind a disorganised back line.
Liverpool’s afternoon was further complicated when Joe Gomez was forced off injured while attempting to prevent the opener, leaving the visitors temporarily down to 10 men and stretching an already depleted defence.
Despite dominating possession, the Reds struggled to impose themselves in the final third, a familiar theme in recent league outings. Van Dijk partially redeemed himself by heading home Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner to spark a comeback, before the Hungarian midfielder levelled matters with a powerful finish late in the second half.
The equaliser set up a frantic finale. Alisson Becker was required to make a superb save from Ryan Christie almost immediately after the restart, while Evanilson squandered a golden chance to restore Bournemouth’s lead. At the other end, goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic denied Florian Wirtz with a sharp stop.
Just as the contest appeared to be drifting towards a draw, Bournemouth found a decisive moment. Liverpool failed to deal with a long throw in the dying seconds, allowing Amine Adli to pounce and smash home from a tight angle with virtually the last kick of the game.
The win is only Bournemouth’s second in 15 matches and lifts Andoni Iraola’s side up to 13th place, giving them a healthy cushion above the relegation zone. For Liverpool, the defeat brings an end to a 13-game unbeaten run and is likely to increase pressure on head coach Arne Slot, with the Reds now winless in five league games and facing the prospect of slipping out of the top four after the weekend’s remaining fixtures.
While Liverpool impressed in midweek European action, this result underlined their ongoing struggles to break down organised Premier League opposition — a concern that continues to overshadow their season.
