Borussia Mönchengladbach’s hopes of securing a positive result against Stuttgart on Sunday were dealt another blow when U.S. midfielder Gio Reyna was ruled out at short notice due to muscular problems. The 23-year-old missed the Bundesliga fixture, which Gladbach lost 3-0 at home, with American teammate Joe Scally unfortunate to score an own-goal during the defeat.

Reyna, who moved to Gladbach in the offseason after a challenging spell at Borussia Dortmund, has struggled with injuries throughout his career. He was sidelined for nearly a month earlier this season with a thigh injury sustained in September, and the club has not disclosed the severity of his latest muscular issue.

The setback comes after Reyna made headlines in November when he surpassed his father, Claudio Reyna, on the U.S. men’s national team scoring list.

Gladbach will now be hoping the midfielder’s absence is short-lived as they look to regain momentum in the Bundesliga.
