Afrobeats and Afrobeat scenes were thrown into controversy in the buildup to the 2023 general elections when differing political views sparked a heated exchange between Seun Kuti and Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P of the now-defunct P-Square group. The clash was triggered by comments surrounding the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The situation escalated after Kuti publicly described Obi as an “opportunist,” a remark that did not sit well with Mr P, who openly supported the former Anambra State governor. In response, Mr P questioned Kuti’s relevance and achievements in the music industry, a rebuttal that quickly devolved into a bitter and widely followed social media feud.
Months after the online war, both artistes appear to have moved past their differences. The pair were recently spotted sharing a warm embrace at a nightclub in Lagos, signaling a reconciliation that surprised fans and onlookers.
During the brief exchange, Kuti was overheard reminding his colleague of their shared identity as entertainers, stressing that political differences should not divide artistes. Mr P reportedly agreed, sealing the moment with a handshake.
The unexpected show of unity has been welcomed by fans, many of whom had hoped the two influential figures would eventually put the dispute behind them and focus on their respective careers.
“We are artistes, we can’t be fighting over politicians.”
