United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has strengthened its digital banking offering with the launch of an online account opening platform designed to allow customers open bank accounts end-to-end without visiting a physical branch. The initiative extends to customers within Nigeria as well as those living abroad, underscoring the bank’s push to simplify access to financial services through technology.
The newly introduced platform supports both Naira and Diaspora accounts and is accessible across multiple devices, including smartphones, tablets, and computers. With multilingual options built in, the solution is positioned to serve a diverse customer base, particularly Nigerians and Africans in the diaspora seeking seamless entry into the domestic banking system.
UBA said the platform was developed in line with global and local data protection standards, noting its compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This, the bank explained, provides assurance on data privacy and security for users regardless of their location.
The account opening process is entirely digital, integrating key verification steps such as electronic Know Your Customer (KYC) checks, document uploads, facial recognition, one-time password (OTP) confirmation, and digital signatures. Upon successful completion, customers are issued account numbers instantly, enabling immediate access to banking services.
Commenting on the development, the bank’s Group Head, Retail and Digital Banking, Shamsideen Fashola, said the platform reflects UBA’s commitment to breaking down traditional barriers to banking. He noted that the solution is designed to make account opening fast and convenient for individuals both on the African continent and in the diaspora.
Also speaking, Group Head, Brand, Marketing and Corporate Communication, Alero Ladipo, said the initiative balances regulatory requirements with customer convenience, delivering a smooth and user-friendly experience for retail customers.
UBA operates in 20 African countries and has a presence in key global financial centres, including the United Kingdom, United States, France, and the United Arab Emirates. The bank serves more than 50 million customers worldwide, offering retail, commercial, and institutional banking services across its network.
