Bauchi State has received a significant boost in its fight against HIV/AIDS, as the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) donated 25,000 HIV test kits to the state government. The kits were handed over on Monday in Bauchi, with officials describing the intervention as timely and critical to improving child health outcomes.

Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, Head of UNICEF’s Chief Field Office in Bauchi, said the donation aims to strengthen early detection and treatment of HIV, particularly among children under five years old. She emphasized that early diagnosis is essential in preventing mother-to-child transmission, a major route through which children contract the virus.

“This is a critical intervention aimed at identifying HIV infection early and saving the lives of children by preventing mother-to-child transmission,” Dr. Rafique said. She added that mothers whose children are tested will receive proper counselling on nutrition and breastfeeding practices, ensuring better care and support for affected families.

The donation comes amid concerns over inadequate testing resources in the state, which have hindered screening efforts across different population groups. Dr. Adamu Sambo, Chairman of the Bauchi State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Malaria (BACATMA), described the intervention as a major relief.

“These kits are timely, and they will go a long way in bridging the gap across various age groups,” he said, noting that the kits will help ascertain children’s HIV status and serve as a crucial risk-control measure.

Dr. Sambo also revealed that the kits will be distributed to partners across the state, including primary healthcare facilities, secondary institutions, and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), particularly for malnourished children.

He added that the state has been facing challenges due to a shortage of HIV test kits, affecting the ability to screen effectively. With the new donation, officials are optimistic that early detection and improved treatment outcomes will significantly reduce HIV transmission among children in Bauchi.
