The University of Ibadan (UI) has been recognised as Nigeria’s leading institution in both law and medicine, according to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2026.

The rankings, published on the THE website, place UI among the world’s top universities in two highly competitive academic fields. The findings were accessed on Saturday.

Nigeria Makes Strong Showing in Global Law Rankings

In the law category, UI and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) were ranked within the 301–400 band, confirming Nigeria’s presence among 425 top law schools worldwide.

The law ranking evaluates institutions based on teaching quality, research output, international outlook, and performance across various legal disciplines, including constitutional, criminal, corporate, and international law.

THE explained that the 2026 law rankings assess excellence in several areas, including:

  • constitutional and administrative law
  • international law
  • commercial and corporate law
  • criminal law and justice
  • legal theory and jurisprudence

Globally, Stanford University secured the top position in the law ranking, underscoring its global reputation for teaching excellence.

UI Leads Nigerian Universities in Medicine and Health Rankings

In the medicine and health category, UI once again topped Nigerian universities, appearing in the 301–400 band, ahead of the University of Lagos (401–500).

THE described the medical and health ranking as an evaluation of universities across disciplines such as medicine, dentistry, nursing, and other healthcare fields. The ranking considers teaching quality, research, and industry engagement.

Oxford University emerged as the global leader in medicine and health, praised for its exceptional performance across teaching, research, and industry partnerships. University of California, Berkeley also broke into the top 10, highlighting the competitive nature of the ranking.

This year’s ranking assessed 1,230 universities from 102 countries, using 18 performance indicators that align with the overall THE World University Rankings 2026, but calibrated specifically for medical and health disciplines.

Several Nigerian universities also featured across different bands in the medical and health rankings:
