A heated online exchange has erupted between award-winning Afrobeats star Wizkid and Seun Kuti, son of the late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, following comments by Wizkid’s fan base that likened the singer to Fela.

The controversy began when members of Wizkid FC described the “Ojuelegba” hitmaker as a “modern-day Fela,” a comparison that drew sharp criticism from Seun, who described the remark as disrespectful and undermining the late icon’s legacy.

Seun, 43, took to Instagram to condemn the comparison, insisting that Fela’s historical and cultural significance should not be reduced to modern pop comparisons. He also warned Wizkid FC against what he called a “careless and insulting narrative,” urging them to stop trivialising his father’s legacy.

Wizkid Responds with Strong Words

Wizkid reacted on Tuesday via his Instagram Stories, reposting a video of a young woman identified as “Riri,” who criticized Seun in Yoruba and condemned his recent conduct.

In the video, Riri questioned why Seun’s family had not intervened, accusing him of spending “seven days and seven nights” behaving irrationally online. She claimed he had been verbally attacking people and “cursing their children,” warning that such behaviour would not end well for him or his father’s legacy.

She also argued that Wizkid has kept Fela’s memory alive for a new generation, questioning Seun’s bitterness and suggesting that the comparison to Fela was an honour rather than an insult.

“If not for Wizkid, who would still talk about Fela today?” she said, adding that she believed Seun had inherited nothing from his father besides “pants and weeds.”

“I’m Bigger Than Your Papa”

In a separate Instagram post, Wizkid escalated the situation by openly insulting Seun and claiming he is bigger than Fela.

“Pussy boy, Seun Kuti. Okay, I big pass your papa (daddy). Wetin you wan do (what do you want to do?). Fool at 40. Hungry bastard. I’m big wiz, everyday bugger than your papa! Wetin you wan do fool?” he wrote.

Seun Fires Back

Seun responded on his Instagram Story, urging Wizkid to stay true to himself while taunting him in return.

“Just be yourself, short man, you’re also great. U go delete, you no get mind. Who’s the pussy now, beech? Free Diddy, his Lagos babe, Wizkid is missing him,” he wrote.

The feud marks another chapter in the ongoing debate over legacy, respect, and the boundaries of fan admiration in Nigerian music culture. As both artists continue to trade barbs online, fans and observers remain divided over who is right and whether the comparison to Fela was intended as praise or an overstep.
