Spanish giants Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign Nigeria international Ademola Lookman in a deal valued at €35 million (£30.3 million).

The 28-year-old forward is expected to travel to Spain to undergo a medical after both clubs finalised terms for the transfer, bringing an end to his three-year stay in Serie A.

Lookman has enjoyed the most prolific spell of his career since joining Atalanta from RB Leipzig in 2022, scoring 55 goals in all competitions. His standout moment came in the 2024 Europa League final, where he netted a historic hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen to secure Atalanta’s first-ever European trophy and bring an end to the German club’s 51-match unbeaten run.

The performance placed Lookman in elite company, making him just the sixth player to score a hat-trick in a European club final and the first to achieve the feat since 1975. His exceptional year was capped with individual recognition as he was named African Footballer of the Year.

Born in London, Lookman began his professional career at Charlton Athletic, making his senior debut in 2015. He earned a move to Everton two years later and scored on his Premier League debut, but struggled to establish himself consistently following the £11 million transfer.

A loan move to RB Leipzig in early 2018 proved more successful, prompting the Bundesliga side to sign him permanently in July 2019 for £22.5 million. However, his first full season in Germany was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, limiting him to just one Bundesliga start.

The forward returned to the Premier League on loan spells with Fulham and Leicester City over the next two seasons before reviving his career with a permanent switch to Atalanta. In Italy, Lookman developed into one of Europe’s most decisive attackers, performances that have now earned him a high-profile move to La Liga.

His impending arrival at Atletico Madrid represents another major step in a career that has seen a steady rise back to the top of European football.
