Over 98 per cent of taxpayers who retrieved their Tax Identification Numbers (TINs) through Nigeria’s newly launched national portal have described the process as seamless, according to a survey conducted by the Help Desk team of the Joint Revenue Board (JRB).

The findings were disclosed in a statement issued on Monday titled “Taxpayers Thumbs-up New Tax ID Portal, as JRB Races on With Implementation of Tax Reforms.” The portal, jointly managed by the JRB and the Nigeria Revenue Service, was launched on January 1, 2026, as Nigeria’s centralised taxpayer database.

Designed to unify fragmented federal and state tax records, the platform enables individuals to generate a unique 13-digit Tax ID using their National Identity Number (NIN), while corporate entities can retrieve theirs using registration numbers issued by the Corporate Affairs Commission and other designated government agencies. The initiative forms part of broader fiscal and tax reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, aimed at improving coordination, strengthening revenue administration, and enhancing data security nationwide.

Survey Highlights Strong User Satisfaction

According to the JRB, feedback was gathered through a structured questionnaire circulated on Facebook, X, Instagram, and WhatsApp, alongside telephone interviews. The survey targeted individuals and businesses that had attempted to retrieve their Tax IDs via the new system.

Head of the JRB Help Desk team, Effiong Abasifreke, explained that respondents were asked to evaluate the speed of retrieval, ease of navigation, convenience, and overall user experience.

“At the end of the poll, we collated all the responses and analysed them. More than 98 per cent of the respondents said they had a seamless experience retrieving their Tax ID,” he stated.

Individual taxpayers reported swift processing times, with some noting that their Tax IDs were generated within seconds of entering their NIN details. Corporate users also expressed satisfaction, describing the portal as fast-loading, convenient, and easy to navigate.

Assurances on Data Protection and Reform Objectives

Speaking on the nationwide rollout, the Executive Secretary of the JRB, Olusegun Adesokan, urged taxpayers who had yet to retrieve their Tax IDs to do so through the official platform.

He emphasised that the system was developed as a secure self-service portal, compliant with regulations set by the Nigerian Data Protection Commission, and designed with strong data protection safeguards.

Adesokan also dismissed earlier concerns that financial institutions might use the new Tax ID framework to deduct funds arbitrarily from customers’ accounts, reiterating that the reforms are “pro-poor and pro-growth” and include incentives for low-income earners and businesses.

Implementation of the tax reforms, he added, has commenced at both national and subnational levels, with the JRB collaborating closely with partner agencies to ensure smooth execution.

The Board called for sustained public cooperation, noting that continued engagement with taxpayers remains critical to building a more coordinated, transparent, and efficient revenue system across Nigeria.
