Fela became the first African artist to receive the prestigious award, which was presented on January 31, 2026, at the Grammy Special Merit Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, United States. His children—Yeni, Femi, Kunle and Shalewa Kuti—accepted the award on behalf of the family, representing his legacy on the global stage.
Reacting to the development, the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, described the recognition as a landmark achievement that reflects the far-reaching impact of Fela’s music and message. She noted that the award is not only a celebration of the Kuti family but also a moment of pride for Lagos State, Nigeria and the African continent as a whole.
According to the commissioner, the honour reinforces Lagos State’s reputation as a hub of cultural excellence and creativity. She said Fela’s work played a pivotal role in placing African music on the global map and continues to resonate across generations, decades after his passing.
Benson-Awoyinka added that the Grammy recognition aligns with the state government’s commitment to preserving Fela’s legacy and strengthening the creative industry through sustained investment in arts, culture and cultural diplomacy. She emphasized that Fela’s contribution to global music and activism remains immeasurable, noting that his songs boldly challenged military dictatorship, corruption, social injustice and the oppression of ordinary people, while projecting Africa’s voice internationally.
She further observed that nearly 30 years after his death, Fela’s music remains relevant, influential and widely celebrated around the world, a testament to the power of his artistry and ideals.
