According to the commissioner, the honour reinforces Lagos State’s reputation as a hub of cultural excellence and creativity. She said Fela’s work played a pivotal role in placing African music on the global map and continues to resonate across generations, decades after his passing.
Benson-Awoyinka added that the Grammy recognition aligns with the state government’s commitment to preserving Fela’s legacy and strengthening the creative industry through sustained investment in arts, culture and cultural diplomacy. She emphasized that Fela’s contribution to global music and activism remains immeasurable, noting that his songs boldly challenged military dictatorship, corruption, social injustice and the oppression of ordinary people, while projecting Africa’s voice internationally.
She further observed that nearly 30 years after his death, Fela’s music remains relevant, influential and widely celebrated around the world, a testament to the power of his artistry and ideals.
Members of the Kuti family also described the award as a deeply meaningful moment, saying it symbolises a bridge between generations and highlights the growing global appreciation of African music and cultural expression. They noted that the honour affirms Fela’s lasting impact not only as a musician but as a cultural revolutionary whose work inspired resistance, dialogue and artistic freedom.
