A recent social media post by Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo has stirred conversation across Nigeria’s online space after the cleric unveiled a Bible-inspired tattoo to mark his 50th birthday.

The tattoo, inscribed in Roman numerals as “III: XVI,” represents John 3:16—one of Christianity’s most widely referenced scriptures. The reveal was shared in a short video on Okonkwo’s official Instagram page, accompanied by a voice-over reciting the verse. The clip quickly went viral, drawing mixed reactions from followers and the wider public.

While some social media users questioned the appropriateness of a pastor having a tattoo, others applauded what they described as a creative and unconventional method of spreading the Christian message.

Responding to the debate in a Facebook post on Sunday, Okonkwo explained that the tattoo was never intended as a fashion statement. According to him, the focus on personal appearance missed what he described as the larger picture—the reach of the gospel message itself.

He noted that within 24 hours of the video’s release, the scripture had been shared and discussed by numerous blogs and across multiple social media platforms, effectively exposing millions of people to the biblical message. Okonkwo described this level of attention as a form of mass evangelism achieved in a short time.

The relationship coach and founder of the David Christian Centre added that he would provide a more detailed explanation during a church programme scheduled for later in the week.

He also invited members of the public to a praise and thanksgiving service at the David Christian Centre in Lagos, describing the event as a celebration filled with worship, joy, food and fellowship.

According to Okonkwo, while criticism focused on the tattoo itself, the broader outcome was the widespread proclamation of John 3:16—a result he considers more important than the controversy it generated.
