Airtel Africa and SpaceX have announced the successful testing of data and messaging services with Starlink Mobile in Kenya, marking a major milestone in the effort to bring satellite-to-mobile connectivity to millions of people across Airtel Africa’s 14 markets.

The tests targeted “no connectivity” areas—locations where terrestrial mobile networks traditionally have no signal. In these remote regions, Starlink Mobile was seamlessly activated, allowing 4G-compatible smartphones to access Starlink’s constellation of 650 satellites, keeping users connected even in previously unreachable areas.

During the testing phase, the service supported a range of light-data applications, including WhatsApp calls and messaging, maps, Facebook Messenger, and Airtel mobile financial transactions. Users remained connected to these essential apps, highlighting the potential for improved access to communication and financial services in hard-to-reach locations.

“We are thrilled to move from announcement to actionable steps with our partners at SpaceX,” said Sunil Taldar, Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Africa.
“This testing phase in Kenya is a testament to our commitment to expanding global access. By integrating Starlink Mobile’s technology, we are ensuring that our customers remain connected even when they travel beyond our terrestrial network.”

Following the successful tests in Kenya, Airtel Africa and Starlink Mobile plan to leverage insights from the trial to expand the service across Airtel Africa’s 14 markets, subject to country-specific regulatory approvals. Future plans include the launch of voice calling and expanded data capabilities through Starlink Mobile V2 technology, which will enable broadband connectivity directly to mobile phones.

Airtel Africa operates in 14 countries across sub-Saharan Africa, offering mobile voice, data, and mobile money services to over 174 million customers. The company’s strategy focuses on delivering seamless customer experiences and driving digital and financial inclusion across its footprint.

Starlink Mobile operates the world’s largest constellation of 650 low-Earth orbit satellites, delivering data, voice, video, and messaging services to devices in areas traditionally considered mobile dead zones. By acting as a cell tower in space, Starlink Mobile enables LTE phones to connect wherever the sky is visible, offering seamless integration with mobile networks worldwide.

This partnership between Airtel Africa and SpaceX demonstrates the growing potential of satellite-to-mobile technologies in bridging connectivity gaps and expanding access to critical services across Africa.
