According to Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Media and Strategy, the Hajj operation will mark the airport’s first international flight and represents a significant step in the state’s efforts to establish Gateway International Airport as a key aviation hub in the South-West.
“For years, residents of Ogun and neighbouring states had to travel to Lagos for both domestic and international flights. The Gateway International Airport, built to high engineering standards, will change that,” Akinmade said. He added that the planned operation forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen aviation infrastructure, stimulate economic growth, and position Ogun as a logistics and transportation hub.
Preparations for International Operations
To facilitate the launch of international flights, Governor Abiodun has engaged key federal agencies, including the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). Capt. Dapo Olumide, the Consultant on Aviation Matters and Accountable Manager of Gateway International Airport, has coordinated discussions with these agencies to ensure all regulatory, security, and operational requirements are met.
Akinmade noted that consultations have focused on establishing a robust security framework, deploying specialised personnel, installing passenger processing systems, and ensuring compliance with Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) standards. Security agencies have pledged full cooperation to guarantee smooth Hajj operations.
Infrastructure and Capacity
During a strategic meeting at the airport in Ikenne Local Government Area, Commissioner for Transportation Gbenga Dairo confirmed that Gateway International Airport has the infrastructure and management capacity to handle Hajj flights. A temporary pilgrims’ camp will be established at the airport to process approximately 500 pilgrims for departure.
Olumide highlighted that the airport, which has already commenced commercial flight operations, is equipped with modern facilities capable of accommodating different categories of aircraft. He added that the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria has inspected and approved the airport for pilgrimage operations, while the Ogun State Muslim Welfare Board is coordinating the airlift.
Uyiekpen Asuen, representing the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, confirmed that the airport meets operational standards and has received the necessary approvals to commence international and commercial flights. Gateway International Airport is among 17 airports nationwide designated for Hajj operations.
With these preparations, Ogun State is set to become a major player in regional air transport, offering residents direct access to international destinations for both religious and commercial travel.
