‘One Battle After Another’ Dominates 2026 Oscars as Paul Thomas Anderson Secures First Academy Awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has concluded the 98th edition of the Academy Awards, celebrating a standout year in global cinema with several critically acclaimed films taking top honors.

Leading the night was One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, which emerged as the biggest winner of the ceremony with six awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, Best Editing, and the first-ever Oscar for Best Casting.

The Best Supporting Actor award went to Sean Penn for his performance in the film.

The triumph marked a milestone for Anderson, who secured his first-ever Academy Awards despite receiving 14 nominations since 1998, making the victory particularly significant for the acclaimed filmmaker and his long-time supporters.

Major Wins for ‘Sinners’

Another standout of the night was Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler. The vampire-themed period drama earned four Oscars, including Best Original Screenplay for Coogler and Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan.

The film also won Best Original Score for composer Ludwig Göransson and Best Cinematography for Autumn Durald Arkapaw. Arkapaw’s win marked a historic moment, as she became the first female cinematographer to receive an Academy Award in the category.

For Göransson, the award represented his third Oscar, following previous wins for Black Panther (2018) and Oppenheimer (2023).

Frankenstein’ Claims Three Awards

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro also enjoyed a strong showing with his film Frankenstein, which took home three awards: Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

International and Animation Honors

Elsewhere, the animated film KPop Demon Hunters won Best Animated Feature, while Sentimental Value secured the award for Best International Feature.

The ceremony, held on Sunday, March 15, was hosted by comedian and television personality Conan O'Brien, who led the celebration of the year’s achievements in filmmaking.

The awards highlighted a diverse range of cinematic storytelling, from blockbuster productions to international and independent films, underscoring the evolving landscape of global cinema.
