Roberto Martinez has clarified the reasons behind the exclusion of Cristiano Ronaldo and Bernardo Silva from Portugal’s squad for upcoming friendly matches against United States and Mexico. These games mark the final international fixtures for Portugal ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

Speaking to reporters, Martinez reassured fans that Ronaldo’s absence is temporary and not expected to affect his participation in the World Cup. “The World Cup is not at risk. He is not at risk, no. It’s a small muscle injury, and we think he should be able to return in about a week or two,” Martinez said.

Ronaldo has not played since February 28, when he left Al-Nassr’s 3-1 victory over Al-Fayha due to a hamstring injury. The club confirmed the injury, and the five-time Ballon d’Or winner traveled to Madrid for treatment. Martinez emphasized that Ronaldo remains in excellent condition, having undertaken significant physical work this season.

Bernardo Silva was also left out of the squad, a decision Martinez described as a technical one informed by medical advice from his club, Manchester City. “It’s a technical choice, based on the medical info that the player’s team gave,” the coach said.

Portugal will face Mexico at Estadio Azteca on March 28, followed by a match against the United States in Atlanta on April 1. Martinez’s careful management of key players ahead of the World Cup highlights Portugal’s intent to ensure fitness and readiness for the tournament while navigating minor injuries and player workload.
