World record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, opened her 2026 campaign on a high note by finishing second in the women’s 200m at the Velocity Fest in Jamaica, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Known predominantly for her exploits in the hurdles, Amusan demonstrated her versatility on the track, clocking a season-best 23.25 seconds. The performance was enough to secure a runner-up finish behind Jamaican sprint icon Elaine Thompson-Herah, who took the victory in 22.61 seconds. Another Jamaican, Ackera Nugent, rounded out the podium in third place with a time of 23.35 seconds.

Sunday’s outing marked an encouraging return for Amusan, who was Nigeria’s sole medallist at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, winning silver in her signature 100m hurdles. The race also offered a valuable opportunity for her to build competitive form ahead of key international events this season.

Among the competitions confirmed for Amusan this year is the prestigious Prefontaine Classic in Eugene on July 4, where she will return to her specialty, the 100m hurdles. Part of the Diamond League series, the event at Hayward Field is expected to feature one of the strongest fields in the discipline this season, including reigning Olympic champion Masai Russell, two-time world champion Danielle Williams, and World Championships bronze medallist Grace Stark.

Amusan, 28, has a storied history at Hayward Field, having set her current world record of 12.12 seconds and won her first world title at the 2022 World Championships. She later returned in 2023 to claim the Diamond League final title, cementing her status as one of the most dominant athletes in the event. Over the past decade, she has won the Diamond League final in the 100m hurdles for three consecutive seasons from 2021 to 2023.

With a strong start to the season and a clear focus on her hurdles specialty, Amusan is positioning herself for another standout year on the international stage.
