Nigerian singer Asake has reflected on how Lagos played a defining role in both his personal growth and musical breakthrough, describing the city as central to his transformation into adulthood.

Lagos as a Turning Point

The “Sungba” crooner, who relocated to Lagos after completing his studies at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, said the city was instrumental in shaping his outlook on life and career.

“Lagos taught me how to live like a man. Lagos inspired most of my songs,” he said.

According to him, the fast-paced and competitive environment of Lagos helped him mature quickly and influenced much of his creative output.

Gratitude for Global Success

Asake also expressed appreciation for his international recognition, noting that many equally talented artistes remain unheard despite their abilities.

“I’m happy because there are a lot of people who make music out there and a lot of people who are more talented than me. I’m thankful to God that I’m able to use the talent He gave me - not only locally but also globally. So for that, I give all thanks to God.”

Rising Global Presence

Since breaking into the mainstream, Asake has grown into one of Nigeria’s most prominent music exports, with a sound that blends Fuji influences with contemporary Afrobeats. His remarks highlight both his humility and his awareness of the highly competitive nature of the music industry.

His journey continues to underscore Lagos’ reputation as a creative hub that has shaped the careers of several leading Nigerian artistes.
