Nigeria’s push to strengthen its gas infrastructure has received a significant boost as NNPC Limited announces the successful completion of a critical segment of the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) Gas Pipeline project.

At the heart of this achievement is the River Niger crossing—one of the most technically demanding phases of the 130-kilometre pipeline—now fully completed. The development marks a turning point for the OB3 project, unlocking its full operational potential and reinforcing Nigeria’s ambition to build a more integrated and resilient gas transmission network.

A Strategic Infrastructure Breakthrough

Executed by the NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company in partnership with PCE Nig. Limited, the crossing was constructed დაახლოებით two kilometres beneath the riverbed of the River Niger. The project relied on advanced horizontal directional drilling (HDD) technology, enabling engineers to navigate complex subsurface conditions while maintaining environmental and structural integrity.

With the crossing now complete, the OB3 pipeline is positioned to deliver up to 2 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day. This capacity is expected to significantly improve energy availability, stabilize supply, and support Nigeria’s broader economic development goals.

Leadership Applauds Engineering Feat

Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, described the milestone as a defining moment for Nigeria’s energy sector. He emphasized that overcoming the engineering challenges associated with the River Niger crossing reflects both technical excellence and disciplined project execution.

According to him, the project not only strengthens domestic gas utilization but also enhances power generation capacity and industrial growth nationwide. He noted that the success builds on lessons learned from earlier infrastructure efforts, including the AKK pipeline crossing completed in 2025.

Driving National Energy Integration

Beyond its technical significance, the OB3 pipeline plays a central role in connecting Nigeria’s gas-rich eastern region to demand centres in the west and north. By linking with the AKK pipeline, it forms part of a broader network designed to ensure seamless gas distribution across the country.

In the near term, the completed crossing is expected to unlock more than 500 million standard cubic feet of additional gas supply for the domestic market. This increase will support electricity generation, boost industrial activities, and potentially expand gas exports within the West African sub-region.

Government Backing and National Vision

The milestone also reflects alignment with the Federal Government’s long-term energy objectives under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The administration’s “Gas-to-Prosperity” agenda aims to harness Nigeria’s vast gas reserves to drive economic growth, with production targets set at 12 billion standard cubic feet per day by 2030.

Ojulari acknowledged the role of government support, as well as the guidance of NNPC’s board led by Ahmadu Musa Kida, in ensuring the project’s success.

Community and Industry Collaboration

The successful execution of the River Niger crossing also underscores the importance of collaboration. NNPC credited host communities, project teams, and contractors for their sustained commitment and professionalism throughout the project lifecycle.

As Nigeria continues to invest in large-scale energy infrastructure, the OB3 pipeline stands out as a critical national asset—one that not only strengthens energy security but also lays the foundation for long-term industrialisation and improved living standards.

With this milestone achieved, attention now shifts to maximizing the pipeline’s capacity and ensuring that its benefits are felt across the country’s economy.
