Academic activities at the University of Jos have been disrupted as lecturers commenced an indefinite strike over the non-payment of their March 2026 salaries.

The action was confirmed on Wednesday by Professor Jurbe Molwus, Chairman of the institution’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), who stated that members would not resume duties until their salaries are paid.

“We are on strike, and we are not going to work until we are paid,” Molwus said, noting that the industrial action took effect from April 8, 2026.

In a statement circulated among lecturers, the union expressed frustration over the delay, directing members to withdraw from all academic and administrative responsibilities, including lectures, examinations, and statutory meetings.

“After following due process, we hereby request all members to abstain from lectures, conduct of examinations and statutory meetings as our salary for the month of March 2026 is yet to be paid despite our patience,” the statement read.

The union attributed the delay to the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, noting that the university’s bursary department had already completed its part of the salary processing.

“It seems our patience is being taken for granted by those who are determined to frustrate industrial harmony,” the statement added.

ASUU further emphasized that the strike aligns with its National Executive Council (NEC) and local congress resolutions, warning that a monitoring team would be deployed to ensure full compliance among members.

The development is expected to affect academic schedules and student activities at the university, adding to ongoing concerns about stability in Nigeria’s higher education sector.
