At the centre of the initiative is a smart authentication system tailored to address a persistent issue in the local skincare market—fake body oils. The campaign specifically targets Vaseline Body Oils, identified by the brand as the most frequently counterfeited segment in its Nigerian portfolio.
Driving the campaign is the “Vaseline Authenticator,” a user-friendly verification tool built on WhatsApp. The process is simple and accessible: consumers scan a QR code or follow a link to initiate a chat, upload images of a product, and receive near-instant confirmation on whether the item is genuine. Responses are delivered through a character-driven interface styled as a royal assistant, adding a narrative layer to the experience.
What sets the campaign apart is its cultural storytelling. It cleverly reinterprets the widely recognised “Nigerian Prince” scam stereotype, transforming it from a symbol of deception into one of trust and consumer protection. The campaign features Prince Chris Okagbue, a real royal figure from the Onitsha Kingdom, who serves as the face of the initiative.
Developed by Leo Singapore under the Publicis Groupe network, the campaign positions the prince as a credible authority who helps consumers distinguish authentic products from fakes. Through a series of social videos, he references the infamous scam emails often linked to “Nigerian princes,” flipping the narrative to expose counterfeit skincare products that may contain unsafe or unregulated ingredients.
Beyond its creative execution, the campaign delivers tangible value. By combining a familiar digital platform with an engaging storyline, it not only raises awareness about counterfeit goods but also provides shoppers with a practical tool to make safer purchasing decisions.
In reframing a global stereotype into a force for consumer education and protection, Vaseline Nigeria’s approach stands out as both culturally insightful and functionally impactful—demonstrating how storytelling and technology can work together to solve real market challenges.
