After a prolonged absence from the spotlight, seasoned Nollywood actor Sunday Afolabi has made a return to film, marking a new chapter in a career that once defined parts of the Yoruba movie scene.

The actor, widely recognised for his role in the classic film Owo Blow, resurfaced publicly following confirmation that he is currently involved in a new production titled ILEKE. The project is produced by Seyi Edun, popularly known as Shai, and directed by Adebayo Tijani.

News of Afolabi’s return was shared by fellow actor Adeniyi Johnson, who posted a photo from the movie set on Instagram on Sunday. In his post, Johnson expressed enthusiasm about the veteran’s comeback, noting that Afolabi is once again available for acting roles both within and outside Lagos.

The development comes weeks after a video circulated widely on social media showing Afolabi engaged in activities associated with commercial transport operations in Lagos. In the footage, he appeared to be assisting passengers inside a minibus, prompting concern among fans over his wellbeing and sparking conversations about the welfare of veteran actors.

Earlier reports indicated that Afolabi had faced significant personal and financial challenges in recent years. During a 2025 discussion with actor Kunle Afod, he reportedly spoke about the impact of losing his wife and the strain it placed on his life and career. Turning to commercial driving, he explained, was a pragmatic decision aimed at sustaining himself during a period with limited acting opportunities.

Afolabi rose to prominence in the 1990s and early 2000s, featuring in several notable Yoruba-language productions. His filmography includes titles such as Luwo Gbagida (2025), The Lost Heir (2018), and The Herbert Macaulay Affair (2019). However, like many actors of his era, his visibility declined amid shifts in Nollywood toward newer talent, faster production models, and evolving storytelling formats.

His most recent appearance before this return was in the Africa Magic series Itura in 2023.

The actor’s reappearance on set has been met with relief and renewed interest from fans and colleagues, many of whom had previously called for support following the viral video. Observers say his comeback underscores both the resilience of veteran performers and ongoing conversations about sustainability and welfare within the Nigerian film industry.
