The unprecedented achievement was sealed as Arsenal FC booked their place in the UEFA Champions League final with a 2-1 aggregate win over Atlético Madrid on Tuesday, completing the trio of English finalists across UEFA’s elite competitions.
The feat was completed later in the week when Aston Villa FC and Crystal Palace FC also progressed in their respective tournaments, ensuring England representation in all three European finals for the first time in history.
Villa and Palace complete the historic set
Unai Emery’s Aston Villa overturned a first-leg deficit to produce a commanding 4-1 aggregate victory over Nottingham Forest, securing their place in the UEFA Europa League final against German side Freiburg in Istanbul on May 20.
Simultaneously, Crystal Palace built on their first-leg advantage over Shakhtar Donetsk with a 2-1 win at Selhurst Park, sealing a 3-1 aggregate triumph and setting up a UEFA Conference League final clash with Rayo Vallecano on May 27.
The Conference League, introduced five years ago as UEFA’s third-tier competition following the abolition of the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1999, now completes a full English presence across Europe’s three men’s club finals.
A rare milestone in English football dominance
While English clubs have previously come close to such a sweep, they had never achieved full representation across all three finals in the same season.
Last season saw a near miss, with Chelsea winning the Conference League and Tottenham defeating Manchester United in the Europa League final, while Arsenal fell short in the Champions League semifinals against eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain.
There have been other periods of English strength in Europe, including 2019, when Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur in an all-English Champions League final and Chelsea overcame Arsenal in the Europa League final in Baku.
In 2021, Chelsea again triumphed in the Champions League, beating Manchester City, while Manchester United reached the Europa League final but fell short.
Historical context: England joins elite company
The current achievement places English football alongside select European leagues that have dominated continental competitions in different eras.
Italy, in particular, has achieved multiple seasons with finalists across all UEFA competitions. Most recently in 2023, Italian clubs reached all three finals but lost each—Inter Milan in the Champions League, AS Roma in the Europa League, and ACF Fiorentina in the Conference League.
However, Italian football’s peak dominance came in 1990, when Serie A clubs achieved a clean sweep of European trophies: AC Milan won the European Cup, Juventus FC claimed the UEFA Cup, and Sampdoria lifted the Cup Winners’ Cup.
Spain has also enjoyed strong European representation, with multiple finals appearances in 1985–86 when clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona featured prominently across competitions.
A sign of Premier League strength
The current season’s outcome highlights the depth of English club football, with three different teams reaching finals across UEFA’s competitions rather than dominance by a single club.
It also reflects the competitive balance within the Premier League, where multiple teams possess the financial strength, squad depth, and tactical quality to compete deep into European tournaments.
With finals still ahead, English football now has the opportunity not only to make history by reaching all three finals—but also to potentially dominate them, marking one of its strongest continental seasons ever.
