The moment of celebration featured Niger Delta activist and environmental advocate, Sheriff Mulade, who was conferred with a Doctor of Philosophy in International Relations. In the same graduating cohort, his 24-year-old son, David Sheriff-Mulade, successfully completed a Master of Science degree in Mass Communication, marking a shared academic triumph for the family.
The ceremony, held on Saturday at the university’s main campus in Abraka, became a symbolic highlight of the convocation, underscoring themes of perseverance, mentorship, and intergenerational learning.
Speaking shortly after the event, David—who also works as a practising journalist with GbaramatuVoice—credited his father’s influence and encouragement as a major driving force behind his academic and professional development.
“I am grateful to my father for his constant support and example,” he said. “This achievement is a continuation of the foundation he has laid, and it will further strengthen my career in journalism and media practice.”
Sheriff Mulade, known for his advocacy through the Centre for Peace and Environmental Justice and his recent emergence as National Treasurer of the Ijaw National Congress, has long been associated with campaigns focused on environmental protection and peacebuilding in the Niger Delta. His latest academic achievement adds a scholarly dimension to his public service profile.
Reactions to the dual graduation have continued to emerge, particularly from leaders and observers within the Niger Delta region, who describe the development as both uncommon and inspiring.
Ijaw chieftain Anthony Okrika noted that the achievement stands out in the history of Gbaramatu Kingdom, describing it as a reflection of shared determination within the family.
“The achievement is unprecedented in the history of Gbaramatu Kingdom, serving as a testament to dedication, excellence, and a shared passion for learning,” Okrika said.
He further commended Sheriff Mulade for his sustained involvement in environmental justice and peace advocacy, adding that his academic progression reinforces a broader commitment to intellectual growth and public service.
“His latest academic accomplishment further underscores his commitment to intellectual growth and public service,” Okrika added. “The combined success of father and son reflects discipline, excellence, and the enduring value of education in shaping future generations.”
The joint academic feat has since been widely regarded as a powerful example of educational aspiration within families, highlighting how shared values and mentorship can influence academic success across generations.
