Arsenal sealed their place in the final after edging past Atlético Madrid with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night. The result, combined with a 1-1 draw in the first leg, ensured the Gunners advanced to the biggest match in European club football.
Paris Saint-Germain, the defending champions, now await Arsenal in the final scheduled for May 30. It marks a major milestone for manager Mikel Arteta, whose side have continued to impress both domestically and in Europe this season.
Despite the excitement surrounding their European success, Arsenal’s attention quickly returns to the Premier League title race. The Gunners currently sit five points ahead of Manchester City, although City have the opportunity to reduce the gap to two points when they host Brentford this weekend.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s fixture, Guardiola openly acknowledged Arsenal’s achievement and applauded Arteta’s work with the team.
“I want to congratulate Mikel and his group on reaching the Champions League final – it’s good for Arsenal, but for English football,” Guardiola said.
The City boss also highlighted the broader success of English clubs across European competitions this season. He pointed to the impressive campaigns of Aston Villa under manager Unai Emery, as well as Crystal Palace led by Oliver Glasner.
“The same like Aston Villa; Unai showed again how incredible a manager he is. I think six Europa League finals,” Guardiola stated.
“And the same with Crystal Palace with Oliver. It’s good for English football three teams are going to play in three finals – it’s really, really good.”
Guardiola also reflected on the intensity of the Premier League title battle, admitting City’s recent slip-up against Everton may prove costly as the season approaches its conclusion.
“Of course, we’re facing a team that has been really good and I know the only chance we had, we dropped two points in a tough game against Everton, but still we try to win, to sleep two points behind them, and see what happens…” he added.
With both clubs still chasing silverware on multiple fronts, the closing weeks of the season promise to deliver a dramatic finish in both England and Europe.
