The death of Nollywood star Alexx Ekubo has continued to draw emotional reactions from public figures and fans across Nigeria, with former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi joining the growing list of mourners paying tribute to the late actor.

Obi, in a statement shared on X on Friday, expressed deep sorrow over the actor’s passing, describing the development as a painful moment for the Nigerian entertainment industry and millions who admired Ekubo’s work over the years.

“I received with sadness the heartbreaking news of the passing of young and talented Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo, whose death has left the Nigerian entertainment industry and millions of admirers across the country mourning,” Obi stated.

The former Anambra State governor noted that Ekubo was not only admired for his talent on screen but also represented the creativity and youthful energy that continue to shape Nigeria’s entertainment sector globally.

Speaking on behalf of himself and supporters of Nigeria’s creative industry, Obi extended condolences to the actor’s loved ones and colleagues in Nollywood.

“On behalf of myself and everyone who values the immense contributions of our young creatives to nation-building, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues in Nollywood, and the countless fans whose lives he touched through his craft,” he added.

Obi further reflected on the uncertainty of life, saying moments like this serve as reminders of the importance of compassion, kindness and purposeful living.

“At moments like this, we are reminded once again of the fragility of life and the importance of living with kindness, compassion, and a sense of purpose,” he wrote.

He concluded his message with prayers for the late actor’s family and for the peaceful repose of his soul.

“I pray that God Almighty grants his family the strength and comfort to bear this painful loss, and may his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.”

Ekubo reportedly died at the age of 40 following complications from advanced metastatic kidney cancer. According to family sources, the actor passed away on Monday, May 11, 2026, at Evercare Hospital after battling the illness privately for some time.

His family confirmed the tragic development and appealed for privacy as they mourn. Since news of his death broke, tributes have continued to pour in across social media from actors, entertainers, fans and public figures, many remembering him for his charisma, fashion sense and memorable performances in Nollywood productions.

Widely regarded as one of the industry’s recognizable faces, Ekubo built a strong fan base through romantic dramas, comedy films and television appearances, becoming a familiar figure among younger audiences and entertainment lovers across Africa.
