The elegant all-white celebration, held in Maryland, Lagos, attracted notable figures from Nigeria’s communications and public relations space, with guests describing the event as both reflective and inspiring. Throughout the evening, congratulatory messages and glowing eulogies poured in from professional partners, industry platforms, former colleagues, and mentees whose careers have been shaped by Ali-Balogun’s influence over the decades.
Despite the milestone age, many attendees remarked on her remarkable energy and presence. One colleague at the close of the celebration described her as “energetic, composed, and intellectually sharp as ever,” a sentiment widely shared among guests who acknowledged her enduring relevance in the communications industry.
For decades, Dr. Ali-Balogun has remained one of the respected voices in Nigeria’s public relations and strategic communications sector. As the Principal Consultant and Chief Executive Officer of NECCI Limited, she has built a reputation for excellence in reputation management, corporate communications, crisis management, governance advisory, and corporate social responsibility consulting.
Her academic and professional accomplishments have equally distinguished her career. She earned a Ph.D. in Mass Communication from the University of Lagos at the age of 60 — an achievement many have described as proof of her lifelong commitment to learning and professional growth. She is also a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and a Senior Member of the African Public Relations Association (APRA).
Industry observers say her influence extends beyond consultancy work. Through the annual NECCI Public Relations Roundtable, she has consistently created a platform for strategic conversations aimed at strengthening the public relations profession in Nigeria and across Africa. The initiative has become a respected think-tank gathering for communications professionals and corporate leaders.
Ali-Balogun has also continued to mentor younger professionals through her podcast, “Chat with NAB,” where she shares insights on communications practice, leadership, media evolution, and emerging industry trends. Many young practitioners at the birthday celebration acknowledged the impact of her guidance and accessibility over the years.
Her contributions have not gone unnoticed within the industry. In 2021, she was honoured at the Lagos State PR Industry Gala as the Most Inspiring PR Practitioner, further cementing her standing as one of Africa’s leading women in public relations and marketing communications.
Speaking recently after the celebration, Ali-Balogun reflected on turning 70 with gratitude and optimism. While acknowledging the realities that come with ageing, she said she still feels mentally and emotionally strong.
“My morning walks have reduced from about two hours to roughly thirty minutes,” she said with a smile, adding that she does not feel significantly different from when she turned 50 or even 60.
When asked about attaining the age of 70 in a country where life expectancy remains relatively low, the veteran communications expert simply responded: “God has been good to me.”
She stressed that faith has remained central to her journey, noting that her spiritual foundation, discipline, and dedication to work have sustained her throughout her career and personal life.
For many at the celebration, the evening was more than a birthday gathering; it was a moment to honour a woman whose career has helped shape the public relations profession in Nigeria while inspiring a new generation of communications practitioners.
