Popular Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has dismissed concerns over his inability to secure an Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award (AMVCA), insisting that awards are not the ultimate measure of an actor’s talent or impact in the movie industry.
Speaking during an appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast, the actor maintained that his performances over the years speak louder than any plaque or industry recognition.
Edochie argued that decisions made by a select group of award organisers cannot determine his worth as an entertainer, stressing that his confidence comes from the quality of work he has delivered in Nollywood.
The actor boldly claimed that some of the performances he delivered several years ago still remain unmatched in the industry today.
“Performances that I have dropped four, five, six years ago no actor has been able to replicate it till date,” he said.
While speaking about his standing in Nollywood, Edochie described himself as one of the finest actors in the industry. However, he noted that he avoids calling himself the greatest out of respect for his father, veteran actor Pete Edochie, who is widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s legends.
The actor also clarified that he has no resentment toward the organisers of the AMVCA, adding that he has never taken to social media to complain about nominations or award snubs.
“So I will not wait until AMVCA calls me. Call anybody you want to call. I do not have any problem with them. Have you seen me rant on social media before?” he stated.
According to Edochie, his primary concern has always been delivering memorable performances whenever he is given a movie role. He explained that he remains committed to giving his best on screen regardless of public opinion or industry politics.
He further stated that criticism, personal opinions, or negative attitudes toward him do not affect his focus or determination to continue improving his craft.
“Anywhere I find myself, I will keep doing well. Any movie you keep me, I will do my best and drop a fantastic performance,” he said.
The actor concluded by emphasizing that his value is not tied to awards but to his dedication, audience support, and faith in God.
“My worth is not determined by you. My worth is determined by God. It is determined by the amount of work that I put in and the viewers.”
