As Nigeria continues its preparations for future international assignments, Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has shed light on the thinking behind his decision to introduce a number of new players into the national team setup.

The Malian tactician has used recent fixtures, including the Unity Cup invitational tournament and international friendlies, to assess emerging talents and expand the pool of players available for selection.

Chelle handed opportunities to several fresh faces during the Unity Cup, where eight players from the Nigeria Premier Football League were included in the squad. The tournament also provided a platform for a number of overseas-based players to earn their first appearances for the three-time African champions.

Among those who made their Super Eagles debuts at the competition were Femi Azeez, Owen Oseni, Arthur Okonkwo and Rafiu Durosinmi. The coach has continued that approach in subsequent matches, with Banik Ostrava defender Abdullahi Bewene making his maiden appearance in the friendly against Poland.

Genk defender Christian Akpan has also been rewarded with a late call-up ahead of Nigeria's upcoming friendly against Portugal, further underlining Chelle's determination to widen his options and build greater competition within the squad.

Explaining the rationale behind the recent influx of new players, Chelle said the technical crew's assessment of the team over the past year highlighted areas that required strengthening.

“We have analysed our game over the past year and have tried to bring in players who can help the team grow,” Chelle told Super Eagles media.

The former Mali coach stressed that the team's long-term success will depend on continuous improvement and attention to detail, insisting that even the smallest margins can separate champions from the rest.

“We need to improve because, for me and for everyone, it is often the smallest details that make the difference between being the best team and winning a trophy,” he added.

With competition for places increasing and new talents being integrated into the squad, Chelle appears focused on building a more balanced and competitive Super Eagles side capable of challenging for honours in upcoming tournaments and qualification campaigns.
