Few players entered this year's French Open with less expectation and more determination than Maja Chwalinska. Now, the 24-year-old qualifier has become one of the tournament's biggest stories after booking a place in the women's singles semifinals with a straight-sets victory over Anna Kalinskaya.

The remarkable achievement makes Chwalinska the last Polish woman standing in the competition, outlasting more established compatriots including four-time Roland Garros champion Iga Swiatek and former Australian Open semifinalist Magda Linette.

Her reward is a semifinal clash against either world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka or 25th seed Diana Shnaider, with a place in the final at stake.

Only the Second Qualifier to Reach the Semifinals

Chwalinska's breakthrough places her among a very exclusive group in Roland Garros history. She becomes only the second women's singles qualifier in the Open Era to reach the semifinals in Paris, following Nadia Podoroska, who achieved the feat in 2020.

Even more significantly, no women's qualifier has reached the French Open final during the Open Era, meaning Chwalinska is now one victory away from setting a new tournament milestone.

One of the Lowest-Ranked Semifinalists Ever

Ranked No. 114 in the world entering the tournament, Chwalinska is now the second-lowest-ranked women's singles semifinalist in Roland Garros history. The only player ranked lower to reach this stage was Lois Boisson, who made the last four while ranked No. 361 in 2025.

Her run underscores the unpredictability of Grand Slam tennis and highlights the growing depth of talent on the women's tour.

A Historic Moment for Polish Tennis

The victory also cements Chwalinska's place in Polish tennis history. She becomes only the fourth Polish woman in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam singles semifinal, joining Agnieszka Radwanska, Swiatek and Linette.

In Paris specifically, she is only the second Polish woman ever to reach the Roland Garros semifinals, following in the footsteps of Swiatek, whose dominance on the clay courts of Paris helped redefine Polish tennis on the global stage.

Rare Achievement in Main-Draw Debut

What makes Chwalinska's performance even more remarkable is that this is her first appearance in the Roland Garros main draw.

Since 1990, only five women have reached the semifinals in Paris during their main-draw debut. Chwalinska now joins an elite list featuring Jennifer Capriati (1990), Clarisa Fernandez (2002), Podoroska (2020) and Boisson (2025).

The tournament is also only the third Grand Slam main-draw appearance of Chwalinska's career, making her run one of the most unexpected and inspiring stories of the season.
