The European giants will take on the Super Eagles at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria next Wednesday in what promises to be a competitive test for both nations ahead of the global tournament.
The fixture will mark the second meeting between Portugal and Nigeria in four years. Their previous encounter ended in a convincing 4-0 victory for Portugal, with Manchester City defender Ruben Dias featuring in the first half of the match, while Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper José Sá remained on the bench.
As Portugal continues its final build-up to the World Cup, the coaching staff views the friendlies against Chile and Nigeria as valuable opportunities to sharpen tactics, assess squad readiness and build momentum before the start of the competition.
The match against Nigeria is particularly significant given that Portugal's opening World Cup opponents, the Democratic Republic of Congo, secured qualification at the expense of the Super Eagles after a narrow victory in the African playoffs.
Speaking ahead of the two warm-up fixtures, Sá emphasized the importance of making the most of the remaining preparation period before the tournament begins.
“These will be two very important games against Chile and Nigeria to prepare for the World Cup. We are focused on giving our best and preparing well for the first game in the competition,” Sá told A Bola.
Dias, who is preparing for his third FIFA World Cup appearance with Portugal, echoed his teammate’s sentiments and warned against underestimating any opposition on football’s biggest stage.
Drawing from his previous World Cup experiences, the central defender noted that every match presents unique challenges regardless of rankings or reputation.
“Yes, they will be extremely important. This is my third World Cup and I have already experienced firsthand, in various and different circumstances, the difficulty of playing against anyone in the World Cup,” Dias said.
Portugal will head into the tournament with high expectations and will use the friendlies to fine-tune their approach before beginning their Group K campaign against the Democratic Republic of Congo. They will also face Uzbekistan and Colombia in the group stage.
For Nigeria, the friendly offers another opportunity for head coach Éric Chelle to evaluate his squad and continue integrating new players as the Super Eagles build toward future international assignments.
With both teams eager to gain momentum ahead of the World Cup, the clash in Leiria is expected to provide a stern examination and valuable lessons for the two sides.
